An activity centre and boxing gym based in an old factory is undergoing a £70,000 revamp.

The Waterfront Boxing Academy in Marjorie Street, Belgrave, Leicester, is being refitted thanks to funding from the Norman Gill Charitable Trust.

Work started about five weeks ago and has involved decorating, carpentry, and refitting the building electrics.

Academy head coach Michael Burgess said: “Norman has been a legend. He’s been blitzing the place and the more work that gets done, the more space we can use.”

Mr Burgess said about 850 people used the building to do everything from boxing to cooking classes.

Mr Gill, whose trust supports causes which help young people, said: “Overall, the job will cost about £70,000. So far, we have spent about £30,000 and we are looking for contributions from organisations to help us finish the job and help this great organisation.”

Barratt Homes has contributed several thousand pounds’ worth of materials towards the refit.

Anyone who would like to make a contribution should contact Mr Gill on 0116 222 3341.
